How Much Soil Do I Need for a Raised Bed?

A simple formula (plus a calculator) to figure out exactly how many bags of soil your raised bed needs.

By Kellogg Garden Team · June 5, 2026

To fill a raised bed, multiply length × width × depth (in feet) to get cubic feet, then divide by the bag size. For a 4'×8' bed that's 10" deep, you need about 27 cubic feet — roughly 14 bags of 2 cu ft mix.

Step by step

  1. Measure length, width, and depth in feet.
  2. Multiply them together for cubic feet.
  3. Divide by your bag size (e.g., 1.5 or 2 cu ft).

Use our Soil Calculator to do the math for you.
